J.T. Nishimura advanced to the singles round of 16 on Saturday in the City.
SAN FRANCISCO/MALIBU, Calif. – California competed in two separate tournaments on Friday, with four Golden Bears starting play in the Battle in the Bay Classic in the Bay Area and two ending their run in the Oracle ITA Masters in southern California.

At the California Tennis Club in San Francisco, senior
J.T. Nishimura advanced to Saturday's singles round of 16 after beating TCU's Reese Stalder, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, in the opening round of 32.

Sophomore Nic Barretto and freshmen
Paul Barretto and
Jacob Brumm all lost in the round of 32. But the three Bears will move on to play in the consolation bracket on Saturday. On Friday, Nic Barretto pushed Georgia's sixth-seeded and 101st-ranked Walker Duncan to three sets before falling, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Paul Barretto fell to Georgia's second-seeded and 21st-ranked Wayne Montgomery, 6-4, 6-4, while Brumm lost to another Bulldog in Georgia's fourth-seeded and 32nd-ranked Nathan Ponwith, 6-2, 7-6(5).

In doubles, the opening round of 16 featured more Cal-Georgia clashes, with the Bears prevailing in two close matches. The pair of Nishimura and Brumm upset the top-seeded and 22nd-ranked Ponwith and Emil Reinberg, 8-6, and the Barretto brothers upset the third-seeded and 53rd-ranked Duncan and Montgomery, 8-6.

But in the quarterfinals, Nishimura and Brumm lost to UC Santa Barbara's Anders Holm and Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, 8-6, and the Barrettos fell to Pacific's Akram El Sallaly and Bernardo Oliveira, 8-7(2).

The Battle in the Bay Classic ends on Sunday.

At Pepperdine on Friday, Griffith fell in the singles and mixed doubles quarterfinals, while Molloy lost in the singles round of 16 in the Oracle ITA Masters.

Griffith, seeded eighth in the tournament and ranked 49th in the Oracle ITA preseason poll, won his round of 16 singles match, beating Drake's 52nd-ranked Vinny Gillespie, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). The Cal senior then took on the tournament's top seed, Wake Forest's Petros Chrysochos but lost to the third-ranked Demon Deacon, 6-4, 6-2.

Molloy faced another talented opponent in sixth-seeded and 22nd-ranked Harrison Scott of Texas in the round of 16, with the Cal freshman falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the mixed doubles quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Griffith and North Carolina's Alle Sanford lost to USC's Tanner Smith and Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy, 6-4.
