ST. HELENA, Calif. – California's J.T. Nishimura lost to Oklahoma's Alexander Bakshi – the eventual singles champion – and fellow senior Billy Griffith also lost in Sunday's quarterfinals as the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic came to a close at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.

The Golden Bears each played a singles match before the tournament's playoffs – called the Solinco USTA Wild-Card Shootout – began. Nishimura won group 3 with a 3-0 record to advance to the shootout after beating Notre Dame's Guillermo Cabrera, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Griffith went 3-0 to win group 4, as his opponent, USTA junior Jaycer Lyeons, withdrew. Griffith instead played and beat USC's Jake DeVine, 7-6(3) 7-6(5), from group 6 before the shootout.

Cal freshman Jack Molloy also won on Sunday, topping the USTA's Keenan Mayo, 6-1, 6-1, to go 2-1 in group 3. But OU's Bakshi (3-0) won the group to reach the shootout. Sophomore Bjorn Hoffmann fell to Baylor's Roy Smith, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3, to finish 1-2 in group 8.

In the quarterfinals/first round of the shootout, Nishimura fell to Bakshi, 11-9, while Griffith lost to Notre Dame's Tristan McCormick, 10-5. Bakshi eventually beat Texas A&M's Valentin Vacherot, 10-7, to win the title and wild-card entry into a future pro circuit tournament.

Griffith and Molloy next play in the Oracle ITA Masters from Sept. 21-24 in Malibu, California, while another group of Bears competes in the Battle in the Bay Classic from Sept. 22-24 in San Francisco.
