Jansen, Manasse Reach NCAA Doubles Quarters
ATHENS, Ga. – California's
Maya Jansen and
Maegan Manasse claimed a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals and earned All-America honors along the way with Friday's win at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Â
The 34th-ranked pair of Jansen, a graduate student, and Manasse, a senior, defeated N.C. State's 22nd-ranked Martina Frantova and Anna Rogers, 6-4, 7-6(6), in the round of 16 to advance.
Â
The Bears will face the defending NCAA champions in Florida's 20th-ranked Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET. The Florida duo beat Manasse and
Denise Starr in the 2016 NCAA doubles final. The quarterfinal will feature four players with plenty of NCAA final experience, including Jansen, a two-time NCAA doubles champion. Â
Â
"That was a good N.C. State team they played today," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "They competed till the very last point. Maegan and Maya did a good job closing that match out in two sets, because a super tiebreak can be super tricky. The longer format of this tournament gives them time to make adjustments, which is good. They'll be playing the Florida team tomorrow that Maegan and Denise played in the final last year. That'll be a great match, and we'll see what happens."
Â
Earlier on Friday, Cal junior
Karla Popovic – ranked 10th and seeded 9-16 – lost to North Carolina's 18th-ranked Sara Daavettila, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the NCAA singles round of 16 to end her season. Popovic ends her season with a 40-6 record and her first singles All-America honor.Â
Karla Popovic is a first-time All-American.
Â
"It was a really, really high level of tennis," Augustus said. "Daavettila is a great competitor as is Karla. Daavettila was just able to get over the finish line today, but their points were long and hard fought. Every game could've gone either way.
Â
"Karla has had an unbelievable season, she's an All-American, and she could be ranked in the top 10 or very close to it when the final rankings come out next week. She's worked very hard and improved tremendously. I can't wait to see what she's able to do at this tournament next year now that she's had this experience of being here. She represented our team very, very well."
