Bears Prevail Vs. Carolinas In Singles Openers
ATHENS, Ga. – California seniors
Andre Goransson and
Florian Lakat both won their NCAA singles openers in straight sets on Wednesday to advance to Thursday's round of 32 at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Â
Lakat – seeded 9-16 – played North Carolina's 22nd-ranked Ronnie Schneider for the second time in a week. In the May 18 NCAA team round of 16, the 12th-ranked Lakat lost to the Tar Heel to clinch the win for UNC. Lakat won the rematch on Wednesday evening, beating Schneider, 6-4, 6-3, after rain led to about an hour-long delay in the first set.
Â
"I think I played pretty well, and it's always a battle with Ronnie," Lakat said. "We played six days ago, and I think I went on court with a different mentality, more of a revenge kind of thing, and it helped me pull through."
Â
Goransson, ranked 61st, knocked off South Carolina's 71st-ranked Harrison O'Keefe, 6-2, 6-2, in the early afternoon, with a lightning scare delaying that match about 30 minutes. The Cal star will have his own UNC rematch when he takes on North Carolina's 16th-ranked William Blumberg in the round of 32. Blumberg beat Goransson in the NCAA team round of 16.
Â
On Thursday, Goransson will play Blumberg at 11:30 a.m. ET and Lakat will face Texas A&M's 48th-ranked Jordi Arconada at 12 p.m. ET.
Also on Thursday, the fifth-ranked and 5-8-seeded pair of Lakat and senior
Filip Bergevi will start the NCAA Doubles Championship, with the Bears playing Duke's 20th-ranked Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak at 5 p.m. ET in the round of 32.
