Olivia Hauger clinched her ninth Cal win of the season to send the Bears to Athens.
BERKELEY - Olivia Hauger clinched another California victory to propel the 13th-seeded/13th-ranked Golden Bears to a 4-0 win over No. 21 LSU on Sunday and to the NCAA round of 16 in Athens, Georgia. The Cal sophomore beat Jessica Golovin, 6-3, 6-1, on court four to complete the win in what was the Bears' last match of the season at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Cal will next play fourth-seeded and third-ranked Vanderbilt on Friday at 4 p.m. ET at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens.
Â
"We're definitely excited to advance to Athens," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We're feeling good where we're at. Everybody's hitting the ball well. We focused exceptionally well this weekend. We made adjustments when we needed to, and of course it's always nice to host at Hellman. We had good conditions. We're really pleased the girls are done with finals now and just ready to enjoy the height of the college tennis season, which is the NCAA Championships. Onward to the next match, but we're really just pleased with what we did this weekend."
Hauger, who has clinched a team-high nine wins for Cal this year including two this weekend, also clinched the doubles point against the Tigers with juniorÂ
Karla Popovic, as the 55th-ranked duo defeated Jade Lewis and Rebecca Weissmann, 6-3, on court two. Cal senior
Denise Starr and sophomore
Maria Smith finished their court-three match at the same time as the court-two match ended, beating Golovin and Skylar Holloway, 6-4. Earlier, the 34th-ranked doubles pair of
Maya Jansen and senior
Maegan Manasse upset the 16th-ranked Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster, 6-2, on court one.
Â
The 123rd-ranked Starr, another senior playing in her final match at Hellman, gave Cal a 2-0 lead in singles when she beat the 105th-ranked Ryann Foster, 6-3, 6-2, on court three. Jansen, a Cal grad student also playing her final match at home, followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rebecca Weissmann on court five.
Â
As Hauger was closing in on her win, Smith was also close to clinching. Smith led Holloway, 6-3, 5-3, on court six when her teammate ended the tournament for the Tigers and sent Cal to the round of 16.
Â
Including Saturday's 4-0 win over San Jose State in the round of 64 at Hellman, Cal did not lose a doubles match nor a set in the first two rounds of the NCAA Championship.
Â
"I actually thought that we focused even better in the first sets of our singles today," Augustus said. "That's something I wanted to see us do. Yesterday, I thought we started a little slow on a couple courts in singles, but I felt today everybody was on a mission on their court. That's college team tennis at its best."
