Maegan Manasse won in doubles and then clinched in singles vs. UW.
BERKELEY - Maegan Manasse clinched No. 9/16 Cal's 7-0 rout of No. 32 Washington on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex, with the Golden Bears improving to 8-0 on their home courts. The Golden Bear senior - ranked 65th in singles - upset the 35th-ranked Stacey Fung on court one, 6-1, 6-3, to give Cal a 4-0 lead over the Huskies, and Cal won the last three matches to make the final score 7-0.
The Bears improved their overall record to 14-3 (7-1 Pac-12). Washington's record stands at 15-7 (4-4 Pac-12).
Â
Friday's match marked just the second time Cal has played outdoors in its last five matches, with the Bears routing Sacramento State, 7-0, on April 5 also at Hellman. Cal played indoors at Colorado on March 31, at Utah on April 2 and at Oregon on April 8.
Â
"It was really nice to be back at Hellman," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We hadn't played outdoors much lately, and we were looking forward to that.
Â
"We came out aggressively in doubles, which was good. We had a good, solid week of practice and worked on a few things. In singles, we were ready for the Huskies to push back, and they did. We responded, with everyone finishing off their matches in straights sets. It was a really solid victory today."
Â
The Bears raced to a 1-0 lead after winning 6-1 on courts one and two. The 51st-ranked pair of Manasse and
Maya Jansen upset the 35th-ranked duo of Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi, 6-1, on one, and then the team of junior
Karla Popovic and sophomore
Olivia Hauger posted a 6-1 win over Fung and Kenadi Hance on two to clinch the point.
Â
In singles, Jansen gave Cal a 2-0 lead when she beat Katarina Kopcalic, 6-0, 6-1, on court five. Sophomore
Maria Smith quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lana Slavica on court six to make the score 3-0. Manasse then posted her second clinching win of the season over on one.
Â
Hauger, ranked 104th in singles, was the last Bear to win a first set, but she won her match next, beating Alexis Prokopuik, 6-3, 6-0, on court four. Popovic, ranked 12th, knocked off the 106th-ranked Kobayashi, 6-1, 7-5, on two, and then senior
Denise Starr – playing in her third to last regular-season home match – dispatched Hance, 6-4, 6-3, on three to wrap up Cal's win.
Â
"I was just glad to get another point on the board," Manasse said of clinching. "We had a really good day today, and I'm excited to see what we have for tomorrow."
Â
Cal hosts Washington State on Saturday at noon in another conference contest at Hellman. Before the match, Cal will conduct its Senior Day ceremony.
