BERKELEY -Â Sixth/12th-ranked California's victory over No. 15/45 Arizona State on Saturday had already been settled, and since it wasn't
Olivia Hauger who won the deciding match, then of course
Maya Jansen clinched it.
Maegan Manasse, one of the most talented players in the country now playing on court two at the Hellman Tennis Complex, hadn't won a singles match since Jan. 30 and had only played singles in four other matches since then. But the Golden Bear senior – a two-time singles All-American currently ranked 45th – changed all that when she posted a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over the 48th-ranked Sammi Hampton to complete Cal's 7-0 win over the Sun Devils.
Â
"It was good for Maegan to be able to play two singles matches this weekend," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said, "and then to get the win today over a ranked opponent was really good for her. She's back on the right track."
Â
"It's been a while since I've been out here," Manasse said. "It's just great being out here and competing with the team again."
Cal improved its record to 9-3 (3-1 in the Pac-12). ASU's record is now 9-6 (1-3 Pac-12).
Â
Earlier, Jansen, the Cal graduate student, beat Savannah Slaysman, 6-3, 7-5, on court five to give the Bears a match-clinching lead at 4-0; the teams played the rest of the singles matches to produce the final 7-0 score. Jansen has now clinched four of Cal's wins this season, while sophomore
Olivia Hauger has clinched the other five.
Â
Also on Saturday, the Bears welcomed several former players back to Berkeley on Alumnae Day at Hellman.
Â
The doubles point came down to court two, after ASU won on court three, and the 65th-ranked pair of Jansen and senior
Denise Starr beat No. 44 Alexandra Osborne and Nicole Fossa-Huergo, 7-5, on court one. Hauger and junior
Karla Popovic, Cal's highest-ranked doubles team at No. 23, defeated Slaysman and Kelley Anderson, 6-3, to give the Bears the point.
Â
Starr gave Cal a 2-0 lead by beating the 70th-ranked Anderson, 6-3, 6-3, at court-three singles, then the ninth-ranked Popovic made it 3-0 when she defeated the 97th-ranked Kassidy Jump, 6-2, 6-3, on court one, before Jansen clinched her latest victory.
Â
Cal junior
Maria Smith then beat Gussie O'Sullivan, 6-4, 7-5 on court six and the 96th-ranked Hauger topped Fossa-Huergo, 6-7(5), 6-0, 1-0(1), to set up Manasse to end the match.
Â
"Today's win was really solid from start to finish," Augustus said. "We were pushed in the doubles and we responded. I think ASU has really good doubles. The way we were down on court one and we came back and finished aggressively was great; same on court two.
Â
"We expected ASU to fight hard in singles; they always do. There were some tight second sets, and the way we finished them off was really good. Everybody worked on something on their match today and got a win on the board."
Â
Cal next plays at Colorado on March 31 and at Utah on April 2.
