LOS ANGELES - California suffered its first loss in about a month when the Golden Bears fell to UCLA, 4-3, on Saturday at the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts.

The Bruins clinched when Cal senior Stephane Lin lost to Kristin Wiley, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Cal, ranked seventh in the USTA Top 25 and 12th in the Oracle/ITA Rankings, has a record of 7-3 (1-1 in the Pac-12) after the Conference loss. The 17th- and 28th-ranked Bruins - who lost 6-1 in a nonconference match at Cal on Feb. 24 - improved to 7-5 (1-1 Pac-12).

UCLA won the doubles point with upset wins on courts two and one. First, Cal's 23rd-ranked duo of junior Karla Popovic and sophomore Olivia Hauger lost to Alaina Miller and Gabby Andrews, 6-1 on two, and then the Bears' 28th-ranked pair of Maya Jansen and Maegan Manasse lost to Jada Hart and Terri Fleming, 7-6(5).

Three straight singles wins lifted Cal to a 3-1 lead, as senior Denise Starr posted a dominant performance to top Fleming, 6-3, 6-0, on court two, the 96th-ranked Hauger added a 6-3, 6-3 win over the 81st-ranked Hart on court three and sophomore Maria Smith bested Andrews, 7-6, 6-0, after losing to Andrews in the February match in Berkeley.

But Cal would not win another match.

On court four, Jansen raced out to a 6-0 first-set win over Miller. But the Bruin eventually prevailed, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4, to make the score 3-2. Court one featured another rematch from the Feb. 24 clash in Berkeley, where Popovic had upset the then-No. 2 Ena Shibahara in straight sets. This time, the third-ranked Shibahara beat the ninth-ranked Popovic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to tie the score at 3-3, until Wiley clinched for the Bruins.

"It was another great conference match," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "There were a lot of bright spots. We didn't play as aggressively in the doubles point as we would've liked. In singles, had some great wins and came up just short in a couple matches. All in all it was a really high-quality match, and we will definitely take some things from this match to work on for next time. We have feeling we may see them again sometime this season."

Cal next hosts the Arizona schools. The Bears take on Arizona on Friday and face Arizona State on Saturday back at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
