SAN DIEGO – Maya Jansen posted the second match-clinching victory of her California career as the No. 8 Golden Bears routed San Diego State, 7-0, at the Aztecs Tennis Center. The first-year Bear and graduate student defeated Mia Smith at court-four singles, 6-2, 6-3, to clinch, as Cal improved to 3-0 after the nonconference win.
 
The host Aztecs fell to 3-3.
 
Earlier in doubles, the pair of senior Denise Starr and freshman Alexis Nelson beat Smith and Alli Valk, 6-4, on court three to clinch the doubles point for the Bears. Jansen also won in doubles as she paired with senior Maegan Manasse to shut out Jana Buth and Taylor Lederman, 6-0, on court one.
 
The Bears come away with one win on what was supposed to be a two-game road trip, though the match at No. 3 Pepperdine on Friday was rained out.
 
"It was a good win," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Unfortunately we didn't get two matches in, but at least got one match in. It was good to get out there and compete. Everyone got the chance to play today, which was good. Our doubles are coming along nicely."
 
Cal next competes in New Haven, Connecticut, starting Friday, as the Bears attempt to defend their 2016 title at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship.
 
"We really get to see where we're at next weekend with the rest of the indoor event, and we're really excited about that," Augustus added. "Now we can focus our attention on that. Everyone hit the ball well today, and it was good to get the road trip in before we take our bigger road trip to indoor nationals."
