BERKELEY – Olivia Hauger clinched No. 7/18 California's 6-1 victory over No. 9/14 UCLA with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Alaina Miller on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Hauger's result gave Cal a 4-0 lead, which handed the Golden Bears the win. The two teams then played out the remaining three matches to produce the 6-1 score.

The nonconference win – televised on the Pac-12 Networks – gave Cal a 5-2 record. UCLA is 6-2.

"We had great matches on all the courts," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "They pushed us, and I was pleased to see us make adjustments. It didn't matter what the overall score was; we still had to battle on every court. Those battles are what makes us better and what makes our conference better. I was really pleased with everyone's play today."

With Cal star Maegan Manasse sitting out the match, fellow senior Stephane Lin moved into the doubles and singles lineups and took advantage of her time, clinching the doubles point with Alexis Nelson and later winning in singles to cap the 6-1 result.

The 23rd-ranked Karla Popovic also moved up to court-one singles to face UCLA's Ena Shibahara. The Cal junior had a 25-1 singles record entering Friday, with her only loss to Ohio State's top-ranked Francesca Di Lorenzo. This time she was facing the nation's second-ranked player in Shibahara. Popovic – who was ranked 20th before the latest Oracle/ITA Rankings came out – improved to 26-1 after beating Shibahara in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

"That was a great win for Karla today," Augustus said. "She played really smart and tactically sound. She's such a great competitor. She's pretty much in the top 20 in the country, and hopefully that will keep her moving up in the rankings. She hit the ball exceptionally well today, in doubles and singles."

In doubles, Popovic and Hauger – ranked 50th – posted the first win, beating Miller and Terri Fleming, 6-1, before Nelson and Lin beat Gabby Andrews and Kristen Wiley, 6-3, to capture the point.

Cal won five of six first sets in singles. After Popovic's win on court one gave Cal a 2-0 lead, senior Denise Starr bested Fleming, 7-5, 6-2, on court two to lift Cal to 3-0 before Hauger settled the match.

"We all came out in singles and in doubles with a lot of energy," Starr said. "It was one of those matches in which we could've made it easy on ourselves if we focused from the start, and I feel like we did that on most of the courts."

The Bears next host No. 26 USC in another nonconference match at noon on Saturday.
