Bears Lose Openers At Fall Nationals
PALM DESERT/INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – California had a rough opening day at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, as the Golden Bears lost twice in singles and once in doubles to talented opponents on Wednesday at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa and the Indian Wells Tennis Stadium.

In the main draw singles round of 64, Cal's 49th-ranked
Billy Griffith fell to Texas A&M's 36th-ranked Jordi Arconada, 7-5, 6-1, while freshman
Jack Molloy lost to 22nd-ranked Harrison Scott of Texas, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In the main draw doubles round of 32, the 39th-ranked pair of Griffith and
J.T. Nishimura split the first two sets with N.C. State's 14th-ranked Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden to force a super tiebreaker. But the Cal seniors wound up losing, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(5).

The three Bears will move on to the consolation brackets on Thursday. In the singles round of 32 at Indian Wells, Griffith will take on Tulane's Ewan Moore at 12:15 p.m. PT, while Molloy will face Kentucky's William Bushamuka at 2:30 p.m. PT. Nishimura and Griffith will play Michigan's Alex Knight and Runhao Hua at 4:45 p.m. in the doubles round of 16 at Indian Wells.
