PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif./MORAGA, Calif. – California's stay at the Riviera Tennis Club concluded on Friday, when
Karla Popovic and
Olivia Hauger fell in the main draw singles round of 16 in the Riviera ITA All-American Championships.
Popovic, a senior seeded fourth and ranked fifth, lost in an upset to Vanderbilt's 63rd-ranked Fernanda Contreras, 6-3, 6-3.
The 75th-ranked Hauger, a junior, fell to FIU's 29th-ranked Andrea Lazaro, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
"Having two Bears in the round of 16 at the main draw in the All-American championships, in the first grand slam of the year, is a great thing," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "Both competed very hard. Karla's match was her second singles match this season, and she made a lot of progress this week. We'll go home and be ready for the next event. Having a really good top-20 win here was a very good start. She will just keep working her way back to full strength. We're excited what her senior season has in store for her."
"Contreras played really well," said Popovic, who knocked off Florida's 15th-ranked Anna Danilina in Thursday's round of 32. "It was a good match. I enjoyed playing today even though the result didn't go my way.
"I'm excited to see what else we can do as a team and for me personally this season. I'm very happy that I was able to play in this tournament and get a good win yesterday."
Hauger finished 4-1 in her first time at the All-American.
"For Olivia, this was a breakthrough tournament for her on the national scene," Augustus said. "To qualify for the main draw and make the round of 16 in her first appearance here was very exciting. She's worked hard for this. She's ready to go."
"I'm super proud of what I've accomplished this week," Hauger said. "It was definitely a goal of mine. Obviously I wanted today to go differently, but I'm super proud of putting myself into position to be here. I got a good look at the competition here at the top level, and this is just the beginning."
"This is really the start of the fall, and we'll use it and learn from it," Augustus added. "They've got regionals in a couple weeks. It's a busy month, but that's what makes the fall part of the season fun."
Several other Golden Bears competed in the Saint Mary's Invitational on Friday in Moraga, California, with three reaching the round of 16 in top-flight singles. Freshman
