Hauger Wins Twice Tuesday At All-American
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Olivia Hauger is one victory away from reaching main draw singles at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships, after the California junior won twice in qualifying singles on Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Hauger, ranked 75th, defeated Hawaii's 31st-ranked and sixth-seeded Petra Melounova, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round and then beat Nevada's 97th-ranked Claudia Herrero, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. Hauger will play Northwestern's Maddie Lipp at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday for the right to advance.
"It was a good first day," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "Olivia really came out striking the ball well. We were less familiar with the first opponent than the second. But being in a big national tournament like this, all the players are good and compete really hard. We came up with a good strategy, and Olivia executed it really well. She did a good job of maintaining her focus and closing out the matches quite well."
The singles main draw, whose field includes fifth-ranked Cal senior
Karla Popovic, begins on Thursday.
