Griffith, Nishimura Reach Tulsa Main Draw
TULSA, Okla. – Billy Griffith and
J.T. Nishimura and
Billy Griffith did not lose a set over two days of qualifying for the doubles main draw of the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships, with the Cal seniors clinching their spot with a third-round win on Tuesday.
The seventh-seeded and 39th-ranked Bears defeated Wake Forest's Alan Gadjiev and Julian Zlobinsky, 6-4, 7-5, at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Earlier in the day, Nishimura attempted to advance out of qualifying singles and join Griffith in the main draw. He upset Louisville's 13th-seeded and 74th-ranked Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round. Nishimura faced another ranked opponent in the final round with a spot in the main draw on the line. But the Cal veteran lost to Texas A&M's 93rd-ranked Valentin Vacherot, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Rain delayed the tournament on Tuesday and forced several matches indoors, with Nishimura's second singles match and the Bears' final round of qualifying doubles played inside at the Case Tennis Center.
Main draw singles and doubles begin on Thursday.
