Defending champs Karla Popovic and Olivia Hauger are one win away from returning to the regional doubles final.
STANFORD, Calif. – Top-seeded
Olivia Hauger and
Karla Popovic won twice Saturday to return to the main draw doubles semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford.
Â
The 11th-ranked Golden Bears are the defending regional champs.
Â
But all three Bears in the singles main draw fell to defeat Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Â
Popovic and Hauger, ranked 11th, beat Oregon's Julia Eshet and Rifanty Kahfiani, 8-4, in the doubles round of 16 and then knocked off San Jose State's Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. The Cal pair of junior
Maria Smith and freshman
Jasie Dunk lost to Gonzaga's Alexandra Bourguignon and Haruna Tsurata, 8-6, in the round of 16.
Â
Also looking to reach the semifinals in the singles main draw, the eighth-seeded and 75th-ranked Hauger lost to Stanford's top-seeded and seventh-ranked Melissa Lord, 6-2, 6-1. The ninth-seeded Smith put up a battle in the quarterfinals against Stanford's Janice Shin but fell to her fellow ninth seed, 6-3, 5-7 7-6(0). Bright, also seeded ninth, lost to Stanford's fourth-seeded Michaela Gordon, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarters.
Â
Vivian Glozman notched a quality win in consolation singles, as the Cal freshman upset Stanford's 44th-ranked Emma Higuchi, 6-3, 2-6 1-0(6); the Cardinal sophomore also lost to Bright on Friday. Dunk added a consolation victory as well on Saturday, with a 6-4, 6-1 result against Sacramento State's Maria Gonzalez. Senior
Audrey Mayer fell to San Francisco's Sarina Chhabra, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0(7).
Â
"Today was a good check in with where we're at in singles," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "Maria played a fantastic match and it came down to the wire, but it's one of the best singles matches she's played thus far at Cal. She had a fantastic tournament reaching the quarterfinals in singles and the round of 16 in doubles for the first time. She'll keep building on those performances this season."
Â
If Popovic and Hauger repeat as the regional doubles champs, they'll qualify for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in November. Both singles finalists from the regional will qualify for the fall championships, so the Bears will have to wait and see if they qualify in singles.
Â
"All of them – Anna, Olivia, Maria and Karla – are in contention for at-large spots in nationals in singles," Augustus said. "I'm pleased with where they're at, though we would've like to have been playing singles tomorrow."
Â
Regionals conclude on Monday.
