STOCKTON, Calif. – The range of talent on the California men's tennis roster was on full display at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday, as seniors Bill Griffith and J.T. Nishimura won their way to the doubles semifinals and three Cal freshmen advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
 
The top-seeded Griffith and Nishimura, who are ranked 39th, beat Stanford's Sameer Kumar and Timothy Sah, 8-5, in the main draw doubles round of 16, before knocking off Everett Maltby and Ivan Thamma of UC Davis, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. The Cal veterans will take on Gonzaga's Sam Feit and Ruadhan O'Sullivan in Sunday's 10 a.m. semifinal. The Zags defeated Cal junior Gunther Matta and freshman Can Kaya, 8-6, in the quarters.
 
In the singles main draw round of 16, the top-seeded and 49th-ranked Griffith fell in an upset to San Francisco's 11th-seeded Johan Jonhagen, 7-6(4), 6-2, while sophomore Nic Barretto lost to Portland State's 17th-seeded Nathan Boniel, 6-2, 6-4.
 
But three first-year Bears - who were members of Cal's top-ranked recruiting class - advanced out of the round of 16, with the fifth-seeded Jack Molloy beating Portland's 17th-seeded Carlos Donat, 6-3, 6-2, to set up a Sunday quarterfinal with Boniel, 12th-seeded Paul Barretto defeating Santa Clara's 17th-seeded Connor Garrett, 6-0, 6-3, and eighth-seeded Jacob Brumm topping Oregon's Ty Gentry, 6-2, 6-4.
 
The singles quarterfinals – including Barretto facing Stanford's sixth-seeded Kumar and Brumm taking on Portland's second-seeded Mike Pervolarakis – are slated to start at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
 
The two finalists from main draw singles and the main draw doubles champion from the regional will qualify to play in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in November.
