BERKELEY – Karla Popovic and Olivia Hauger had one last hurdle to cross before heading south for the All-American Championships – playing freshmen teammates Vivian Glozman and Anna Bright in the top-flight doubles final on Sunday at the Cal Fall Invitational.
 
It wasn't quite a tuneup, as the talented youngsters across the net showed why the future is indeed bright for the Golden Bears. Bright and Glozman took a 1-0 lead after breaking their 11th-ranked teammates early, and the freshmen had three breaks to trail 6-5 in the Blue flight final. But the experienced Popovic, a senior, and Hauger, a junior, broke back to take a 7-5 lead. With Popovic serving, Hauger's forehand volley eventually closed out an 8-5 victory.
 
The top-flight singles semifinals featured one Bear and three Bruins. Bright, the one Bear, fell to UCLA freshman Abi Altick, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, to set up an all-Bruins final with Terri Fleming. The latter, a senior, prevailed, 7-6(10), 6-3.

Cal freshman Vivian Glozman came away with the Blue singles consolation title after she had injury walkovers in the both the semifinals and final.
 
"It was a very good start to the year," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "The doubles was better than I expected to start the year with a couple of new pairings. We haven't had really had that many days of practice, so it was hard to see how it was going to go. They've been learning quickly. Obviously Karla and Olivia are 11th in the country, and to have our two freshmen push them in a final, was very encouraging.
 
"In singles, we had pretty much everyone out there competing, except for Karla, who has the national event next week with Olivia. We had some really good wins, and the matches we didn't win, we pushed their opponents to the third set or till the end of the second. That was great."
 
Popovic and Hauger will next compete in the Riviera ITA All-American Championships, with the pair playing in main draw doubles and Popovic playing in main draw singles from Thursday through next Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
