OJAI, Calif. – Maegan Manasse became just the third California player to win the Pac-12 singles championship when she beat UCLA's Catherine Harrison in Sunday's final at Libbey Park. The Conference crown is the latest award in the stellar career of the Golden Bear junior, who was a singles and doubles Al-American last season. Cal's Olivia Hauger added another accolade to her own excellent young career when she captured the singles invitational championship on Sunday.
“It's a really exciting way to end the weekend,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Both Olivia and Maegan played really well today and played smart tactically. Both competed really hard.”
The top-seeded Manasse, ranked 11th nationally in singles, posted a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over the third-seeded and 17th-ranked Harrison, the defending Pac-12 champ. Manasse joins prominent alumnae in Raquel Kops-Jones (2004) and Zsuzsanna Fodor (2006) as a Conference main-draw singles champion.
“It's a great honor to win here,” Manasse said. “The last time I played her, I wasn't really prepared for how aggressive she was. I was kind of letting her control the points, and then I worked my way back into the match. But this time I knew what to expect. I stuck to my gameplan.”
In her only other career match against Harrison, Manasse beat the Bruin in three sets earlier this season, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“I'm really excited,” said the Redondo Beach, California, product. “This is such a great tournament, and it's great to be in Southern California again. I'm honored to be on the wall of fame to join past pros and join a bunch of Amanda's pictures here as well. It's a great feeling to be a part of history here in Ojai. I'm excited to be here and now excited to go back to Berkeley to get ready for NCAAs.”
Hauger defeated Stanford's Caroline Lampl, 6-1, 6-4, earlier Sunday morning at Libbey Park. The third time was the charm for the first-year Bear, who had lost to Lampl twice this season, with all three matches coming this month.
“Both matches they played before were really close,” Augustus said. “In just a couple of crucial points in those matches, I think Olivia needed to stick to her tactics. She did a really good job with that today. When it got to finishing the match she stayed really disciplined. She's growing as a competitor and player this year. It's good to see that out of a young player like Olivia – to see her make adjustments and get better each match.”
“I was able to watch her match near the end of the second set,” said Manasse, whose final started two hours after Hauger's began. “She's played Caroline Lampl three times in the past three weeks, and it's tough playing the same opponent, especially being down 2-0 going into this match. But Olivia played really great.”
Today marks the first time since 2012 that Cal has won any title at the Pac-12 Championships. Four years ago, Tayler Davis and Laura Posylkin won the doubles invitational championship. The last time the Bears won a championship final was in 2011, when Jana Juricova and Mari Anderson captured the doubles crown.
“It's a great honor for our program to win both singles titles here,” Augustus said. “We love The Ojai and the history of it. To add to the legacy wall here and add to our own legacy wall back at Hellman is fantastic. It'll be a nice drive home for the Bears.”
Top-ranked Cal now awaits the May 3 selection show for the NCAA team tournament to find out its next opponent.
