OJAI, Calif. - California's Maegan Manasse and Olivia Hauger won in their respective singles draws on Friday at the Pac-12 Championships at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club to reach Saturday's semifinals at Libbey Park.

The 11th-ranked and top-seeded Manasse beat Arizona State's eighth-seeded and 28th-ranked Desirae Krawczyk, 6-2, 6-3, in the singles championship draw quarterfinal round.

In the singles invitational quarterfinals, Hauger, a freshman, defeated sophomore teammate Karla Popovic, 6-2, 6-0.

In the doubles championship draw, the second-ranked Manasse and junior Denise Starr entered the tournament as the top seed. But the Bears lost in an upset to Utah's 87th-ranked Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley, 6-2, in the opening round of 16. Also in the round of 16, the team of Hauger and senior Klara Fabikova lost to Stanford's second-seeded and fifth-ranked Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle, 6-4.

In the doubles invitational opening round of 16, the pair of Popovic and freshman Maria Smith beat the mixed duo of Stanford's Lindsey Kostas and Utah's Victoria Robertson, 6-1. But the Bears lost in the quarterfinals to Arizona State's 88th-ranked Samantha Hampton and Kassidy Jump, 7-6(4). Another Cal tandem – of junior Stephane Lin and sophomore Audrey Mayer – lost to Arizona's Samantha Czarniak and Camila Westbrooks, 6-4, in the round of 16.

“We're really excited to have two players in singles semifinals tomorrow,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Maegan was very solid today. She's played Desirae a few times, and Desirae's made some adjustments since then. Maegan was ready for her adjustments and managed her match really well.

“Olivia unfortunately had to play her teammate in the quarterfinals, but we're happy to have another Bear in the semifinals and are looking forward to her to do well tomorrow. It's always exciting to advance to Saturday's matches at Libbey Park. For a freshman to do it is exciting. We'll try to finish the tournament as well as we can. When we get home we'll get to work on our doubles, because we didn't perform as well in doubles as we wanted to.”

The Pac-12 Championships conclude on Sunday.
