SEATTLE – Denise Starr won in straight sets to clinch No. 1 California's eventual 7-0 blowout of No. 47 Washington and keep the Golden Bears undefeated at 19-0 (7-0 in the Pac-12) on Saturday at Bill Quillian Stadium. The Huskies fell to 12-10 (3-6 Pac-12) after the Conference loss.
The 75th-ranked Starr defeated Elianne Douglas-Miron at court-three singles, 6-1, 6-3, to make the score 4-0, and Cal closed out the match with three more singles wins. Sophomore Karla Popovic ended the day with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(6) court-five victory over Kenadi Hance and remains undefeated in dual matches with a 17-0 record. Popovic has a 29-6 overall singles record this season.
Earlier, the sixth-ranked pair of Starr and fellow junior Maegan Manasse clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over the Huskies' Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi on court one. Cal senior Lynn Chi and freshman Maria Smith also won at court three, beating Sophia Bott and Stacey Fung, 6-2.
On Friday, Cal won, 6-1, at No. 57 Washington State and now heads home with a 2-0 record in the Evergreen State.
“Obviously we're pleased to get two conference wins on the board on the road,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “I thought we made good adjustments on the weekend. Our level of play was pretty consistent. Not everybody played their best both days, but if they didn't, they adjusted and played better the next day. Overall I'm pleased and also happy we were able to take the doubles point both days on the road.”
Cal closes out the regular season in the Big Slam at Stanford – in the two team's Pac-12 match – next Saturday, April 16.
