Nishimura, Browne End Doubles Run In Semis

LA JOLLA, Calif. – California sophomore J.T. Nishimura had a chance to bring home some hardware from the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship as he did last year, when he and Andre Goransson won the consolation draw title. This time, Nishimura forged deep into the main draw while paired with Cal associate head coach Tyler Browne. Playing in Sunday's semifinal round at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the seventh-seeded Bears faced familiar opponents in Oklahoma State's Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe, with the top-seeded Cowboys eliminating the Bears, 6-3, 6-3.

The 18th-ranked Bears lost to the No. 5 Cowboys, 4-3, in a dual match at the Club just three days earlier. The 15th-ranked Cash and Kadhe went on to capture the title at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship.

“J.T. and Tyler had a great tournament, and it was an incredible experience for J.T. to play alongside his coach and mentor,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “The Oklahoma State team is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and Tyler was a little fatigued after winning two tough three-set matches yesterday.”

Browne, a Cal alumnus who is in his ninth year on Wright's coaching staff, posted a 72-59 singles record at Cal and was a 2006 All-Pac-10 selection.

“Overall, our team gained valuable experience on this trip, and we look forward to our upcoming match with Purdue at home and Baylor and Oklahoma at Indian Wells during the BNP Paribas tournament,” Wright added.

Cal returns to action when it hosts Purdue on March 13 at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears then take on Baylor on March 19 and Oklahoma on March 20 in the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge presented by Oracle in Indiana Wells, California.
