No. 2 Cal Wins Pac-12 Opener At ASU, 5-2

TEMPE, Ariz. – Maegan Manasse's singles victory on Friday gave No. 2 California a win in its Pac-12 opener (5-2 at No. 36 Arizona State) and sole possession of the best start in school history at 11-0. The 10th-ranked Golden Bear junior bested the 36th--ranked Desirae Krawczyk, 6-3, 7-5, on court one to give Cal a match-clinching 4-2 score.

Cal freshman Olivia Hauger tacked on a 6-0, 6-2 win over Gussie O'Sullivan on court five to make the final score 5-2.

The Bears' 11-0 record eclipses the 10-0 mark the current squad had shared with the 1988-99 team, which included current Cal head coach Amanda Augustus in her senior season.

After dropping the doubles point to their hosts, the Bears needed to win four times in singles to clinch the overall victory. Senior Lynn Chi got Cal off to a good start with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ebony Panoho on court three to knot the match at 1-1. But senior Klara Fabikova –ranked fifth – lost in an upset on court two to Kassidy Jump, 6-3, 6-4, and the Sun Devils again led, 2-1.

But those were the last sets that Cal would lose on the day.

Sophomore Karla Popovic beat Alexandra Osborne, 6-2, 6-1, on court six and then 80th-ranked junior Denise Starr beat Stephanie Vlad, 6-2, 6-4, on court four to give Cal a 3-2 lead and set up Manasse to clinch.

“We're getting there with the doubles,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Court one played much better but didn't finish before ASU clinched doubles. They're on the right track. It's a process. Of course we'd like to win the doubles point, and we keep working towards it. But at the same time we're playing well in singles, and we're confident in our singles. We did a good job on every court in singles today whether we played our best tennis or not. That's the most important thing.

“Maegan's back on track. She definitely prefers playing outdoors. It was a good win. Desirae had a big win last week against (Ohio State's top-ranked) Francesca de Lorenzo. But Maegan is hitting the ball cleaner and serving better.”

Cal continues Pac-12 play when it takes on No. 64 Arizona on Saturday at 12 p.m. MT in Tucson, Arizona.
