BERKELEY – Top-ranked California continued its march towards the best start to a dual-match season when it romped over San Diego State, 7-0, on Wednesday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Denise Starr clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 singles win over Jana Buth on court two.
Cal improved its record to 9-0 after the nonconference win, while SDSU dropped to 3-7.
The Bears opened the 1998-99 season with a school-best 10-0.
The day got off to a good start with the Bears winning the doubles point. The sixth-ranked pair of Starr and fellow junior Maegan Manasse beat Tami Nguyen and Jana Buth, 6-1, on court one, and then the 52nd-ranked duo of senior Klara Fabikova and freshman Olivia Hauger defeated Isabelle Hoorn and Taylor Lederman, 6-3, on court two to secure the point.
Cal quickly moved ahead 3-0 in singles after Fabikova, ranked fifth, beat the 121st-ranked Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0, on court one and the 96th-ranked Hauger topped Paola Diaz de Regules, 6-1, 6-1, on court four. Starr, ranked 80th, then posted her win on court two to make the overall victory official at 4-0.
The Bears and Aztecs played out the final three matches – with Cal winning all three – to make the final score 7-0.
Cal's next match is a big one, as the No. 1 and unbeaten Bears battle the No. 7 and unbeaten Florida Gators (5-0) at Hellman on Friday at 12 p.m. The Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Bay Area will broadcast the match live starting with singles at 1 p.m.
