LOS ANGELES – Fifth-ranked Klara Fabikova shook off a first-set singles loss to beat Kyle McPhillips, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and clinch No. 1 California's 5-2 win over No. 22 UCLA on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Cal improved to 8-0 after the nonconference victory, while UCLA fell to 5-3.
Fabikova had won in doubles earlier, as the Bear senior and freshman Olivia Hauger shut out Terri Fleming and Kelly Shaffer, 6-0, on court two. But the Bruins clinched the point when McPhillips and Catherine Harrison upset Cal's second-ranked team of juniors Denise Starr and Maegan Manasse, 6-3.
The Bears soon tied the match when sophomore Karla Popovic bageled Laura Luca, 6-0, 6-0, on court six, and they took a commanding 3-1 lead with wins from Starr on court four and senior Lynn Chi on court three.
When Hauger fell to Fleming on court five, UCLA pulled to within one at 3-2 and had hope of a comeback with courts one and two going to three sets each.
But Fabikova clinched the match at 4-2 with her court-two win, and Manasse, ranked 13th, bested the 18th-ranked Harrison, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to complete the day.
“It was a good win today for the team on the road,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “UCLA always competes hard against us, and that's why these matches are so good for the development of our team. We didn't play as well in doubles as we played yesterday and have more work to do in doubles before next week's matches.
“In singles, everyone did a good job of stepping up and fighting through whatever the situation – whether they had a straight-set match or they had to fight their way back, as was the case with Maegan and Klara. The tennis on courts one and two was pretty outstanding from all the players. While it was a nonconference match, this was another typical Pac-12 battle, and we're happy to be on the winning end of it.”
Cal returns to the Hellman Tennis Complex for two matches next week. The Bears host San Diego State on Wednesday and No. 3 Florida on Friday in a match televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
