No. 1 Cal Thwarts USC To Stay Unbeaten

LOS ANGELES – Freshman Olivia Hauger clinched a dual-match win for the second straight time as top-ranked California defeated No. 11 USC, 6-1, on Friday at the Marks Tennis Stadium. Hauger also teamed with senior Klara Fabikova to clinch the doubles point for the Bears.

At court-five singles, the 102nd-ranked Hauger defeated the 90th-ranked Rianna Valdes, 6-4, 6-3, to give Cal the win over the Trojans and improve her individual season record to 14-3.

The Bears remained unbeaten at 7-0, while the Trojans fell to 3-3, after Friday's nonconference clash.

In Cal's previous match, Hauger clinched the final of the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship against North Carolina on Feb. 8. That gave Cal its first national team tournament title and earned Hauger the Most Outstanding Player honor as well as an all-tournament team berth.

In doubles against the Trojans, Hauger and Fabikova beat Zoë Katz and Jessica Failla, 7-6, on court two to give Cal a 1-0 lead, after the pair of senior Lynn Chi and junior Stephane Lin topped Valdes and Madison Westby, 7-5, on court three. Earlier, the second-ranked duo of juniors Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr fell, 6-4, in an upset to the 11th-ranked pair of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith.

After Hauger clinched the overall win, Chi beat the 87th-ranked Smith on court three, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(3), and the 121st-ranked Starr held off the 95th-ranked Failla, 7-6, 6-4, on court four.

“I was pleased with the win today,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We saw some improvement on our doubles play, which was great. After indoors we came back and worked a lot on it. And while obviously it was great to get the doubles point, we knew USC would compete till the end, and they did.

“Everyone did a really good job of working through their gameplan in their singles matches and figuring out what they needed to do against their opponent. I thought everyone on every court competed hard, which is something we like to be known for.”

Of Hauger, her first-year Bear, Augustus said, “She's learning to be a more versatile player. She's a great mover on the court, and she's really confident on her ground strokes. We're trying to get her to try different patterns and different angles on the court, and she's becoming more and more confident in that. The player she played today was very different from the player she played in her last match. With her game style, she can beat a wide variety of opponents. That's what we're working on in her game – giving her options.”

Cal next plays at No. 22 UCLA on Saturday at 1 p.m.
