FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – An all-Cal final on Sunday wasn't to be as two Golden Bear duos lost in the consolation doubles semifinals on Saturday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, ending the Bears' campaign at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
 
Third-ranked and third-seeded seniors Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr fell to Baylor's Elizabeth Profit and Blair Shankle, 6-4, 6-3, in one semifinal. Junior Karla Popovic and sophomore Olivia Hauger lost to Michigan's Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian, 6-2, 6-4, in the other.
 
"We had a good weekend here," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "In singles, we played close matches against tomorrow's two finalists (Ohio State's Francesca Di Lorenzo and North Carolina's Hayley Carter), so I think we're right on track. We had some good doubles matches, though there are certain things we'll take home and work on."
 
Thus ends the fall half of the season for the four Bears, though several of their teammates are still competing in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational that concludes Sunday (see below).
 
"Closing out the fall by having four players here in singles and doubles is right where we want to be," Augustus said. "Unfortunately some of the players weren't able to get quite as many matches this fall as they'd hoped. But everyone is on track and will keep working hard. Everyone will be ready to go when we have our next event in January."

TEMPE, Ariz. – Cal's Stephane Lin won two out of three matches on Saturday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, while Maria Smith fell in main draw singles at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
 
In round-robin doubles, the Golden Bear senior paired with Maya Jansen to beat the Sun Devils' Nicole Fossa Huergo and Alexandra Osborne, 7-6(2), after the two Bears lost to ASU's Kelley Anderson and Savannah Slaysman, 6-2.
 
In consolation singles, Lin edged Northern Arizona's Chiara Tomasetti, 7-6(1), 7-6(3).
 
In the main draw quarterfinals, Smith, a sophomore, fell to the third-seeded Fossa Huergo, 6-0, 6-3.
 
The Arizona State tournament ends on Sunday.
