Popovic, Hauger Advance In Moraga
MORAGA, Calif. – California's
Karla Popovic and
Olivia Hauger posted dominant performances in singles and doubles on Friday as the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational opened at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. Popovic, the top-seed in the top singles flight, and the third-seeded Hauger both won in singles to reach Saturday's round of 16, and the two Golden Bears teamed up in the Doubles A flight to advance to Saturday semifinals.

Ranked 90th, Popovic was beating Kristina Breisacher, 6-0, 3-1, in the Singles A flight when the UC Davis Aggie retired with an injury. The Cal junior next plays San Francisco's Joselyn Treyes Albarracin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Hauger, a sophomore ranked 86th, defeated Sacramento State's Karina Vyrlan, 6-2, 6-1, and will also play at 10:30 a.m. – against Santa Clara's Madison Clarke – on Saturday.

Four more Bears played in the singles top flight. Cal sophomore
Maria Smith – the fifth seed – topped Cal Poly's Ilana Oleynik, 6-2, 6-2. Smith will play the Gaels' Kareena Manji at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Junior
Audrey Mayer emerged from the round of 32 when her opponent, Gaelle Rey of San Jose State, withdrew with an injury. But Mayer lost to Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil, 6-3, 6-0, in the only Singles A round of 16 match played on Friday.

Also in the round of 32, Cal senior
Stephane Lin fell to San Jose State's Miyo Kobayashi, 6-3, 6-4, while freshman Alexis Nelson lost to Stanford's second-seeded Emma Higuchi, 6-1, 6-3.

In the Doubles A flight, the top-seeded duo of Hauger and Popovic earned a round of 16 bye and then beat Sacramento State's Vyrlan and Ana Loaiza, 8-2, to advance out of the quarterfinals. The Bears will play Parminder Kaur and Emma Critser of host Saint Mary's in the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The third-seeded Smith and Nelson opened the Doubles A flight with an 8-5 victory over win over USF's Treyes Albarracin and Shanna Dos Santos. But the Bears fell in an upset to the Spartans' Kobayashi and Marine Dans, 8-5. Lin and Mayer lost in the first round to USF's fourth-seeded Emily Maxfield and Genevieve McCloskey, 8-4.

Mayer and Lin also played a consolation doubles match but fell to Stanford's Higuchi and Naomie Rosenberg, 8-7(3).
