TULSA, Okla. – Three of California's tournament-high four players won in their singles main draw openers – and Cal's doubles entry also won – on Thursday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

In singles, Cal's 77th-ranked senior Filip Bergevi topped Columbia's Alex Keyser, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 64. He'll meet Stanford's fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked Tom Fawcett in Friday's round of 32. Senior Andre Goransson – ranked 17th – suffered Cal's lone loss on the day, as he fell in an upset to Arkansas' 45th-ranked Jose Salazar, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-1.

Playing at roughly the same time as Goransson at the Case Center, Cal's 62nd-ranked Billy Griffith knocked off another Columbia player, the 113th-ranked Victor Pham, 6-4, 7-6(4), to advance Friday's round of 32 to meet Georgia Tech's third-seeded and fifth-ranked Christopher Eubanks. Florian Lakat, ranked 13th, bested Notre Dame's 70th-ranked Josh Hagar, 6-4, 6-2. The Cal senior plays East Tennessee State's 47th-ranked David Biosca in Friday's round of 32.

Later in the day, the second-seeded and second-ranked senior duo of Bergevi and Lakat defeated Minnesota's 13th-ranked pair of Felix Corwin and Matic Spec, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(6), in the doubles opening round of 32. The Golden Bears will next take on Georgia Tech's 14th-ranked team of Eubanks and Carlos Benito in the round of 16 on Friday.

"Very tough windy conditions with temperatures in the mid 90s and a lot of humidity," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "Our guys battled hard out there today, and I felt good about coming away with four wins in five matches.

"Filip started off the day with another gutsy three-set win after being down a break in the third set. Florian served well and used his forehand to overpower his opponent. Billy and Andre played under the mid-day sun, and they both won their first sets. Billy hung on to win a tiebreaker in the second set, and Andre fought hard but lost in three sets.

"Florian and Filip dominated with their serves and returns for a set and a half, but they were forced into a third-set tiebreaker, in which they eventually prevailed. Overall, a strong day for the Bears, and I've been impressed with the level of physicality the guys have been bringing to the courts each day."

The All-American concludes on Monday.
