DAVIS, Calif. – California freshmen Bjorn Hoffmann and Dominic Barretto will battle for Singles A and B titles, respectively, Sunday at the Aggie Invitational after each won twice Saturday at UC Davis.

"Having two of our freshmen in the finals of the UC Davis Aggie Invitational is a great feeling," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "Bjorn has been using his serve and powerful forehand well to dominate his opponents, and Nick has been using his athletic style to counterpunch and outhustle his opponents. We're getting a good look at how these guys are going to contribute in the spring season."

Hoffman, the fourth seed in the top flight, defeated Stanford's fifth-seeded Brandon Sutter, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in Saturday's quarterfinals before beating Sacramento State's seventh-seeded Mikus Losbergs, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The first-year Bear will face Portland's third-seeded Mathieu Garcia in the final at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Barretto, the eighth seed in Singles B, knocked off Nash Vollenweider of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. An Aggie spoiled a potential Bear vs. Bear semi when Cal sophomore Ryan Shen lost to fifth-seeded Max Pham of UC Davis, 7-5, 6-4. Barretto went on to defeat Pham, 6-3, 7-6(2), to book his spot in Sunday's 11 a.m. final opposite the Aggie's seventh-seeded Eli Whittle.

In a consolation singles match, Cal freshman Ryan Cardiff prevailed vs. Sacramento State's James Cruze, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(3).

Cardiff also won in doubles in the B flight, pairing with Shen to oust the Gaels' Matthew Campana/Manuel De Luis, 8-4, in the quarters. But the third-seeded UC Davis duo of Everett Maltby/Jesse Rosse advanced past the two Bears in an injury walkover.

The three-day tournament ends on Sunday.
