Remainder Of Cal Winter Invite Cancelled

BERKELEY – With showers forecast much of the rest of Saturday and heavier rain expected Sunday in the San Francisco Bay Area, California women's tennis officials have cancelled the final two days of the Cal Winter Invitational.

The start of Friday's matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts were delayed due to early morning rain and wet courts, though Cal, Saint Mary's, Fresno State and Cal Poly were eventually able to play a full slate of matches.

“Obviously we're disappointed that we weren't able to complete the event, but the weather had other plans,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We were happy we were able to get a full day of tennis in yesterday and we're looking forward to starting dual-match play Friday with the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.”

In the rain-shortened, round-robin event, which did not feature head-to-head team matches, fifth-ranked Cal junior Maegan Manasse claimed the singles title with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles. The third-ranked Cal pair of Manasse and junior Denise Starr along with the Fresno State duo of Maiar Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed were named co-champions after each team posted 1-0 records at No. 1 doubles.

Manasse repeated as the Cal Winter Invitational singles champion, and Starr and Manasse likewise won their second straight doubles title in the Bears' tournament. Manasse also won the Cal Winter Invitational doubles title in 2014 with former teammate Anett Schutting.

Cal returns to the courts when the Bears host one of several ITA Kick-Off Weekends on Jan. 22-23 at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Saint Mary's will return to Berkeley and join Cal, Washington and Cal State Northridge in the hunt to qualify for the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships. The Bears open against Northridge at 10 a.m. on Jan. 22, with that match's winner playing the Saint Mary's-UW victor at 1 p.m. on Jan. 23 for the berth to national indoors.
