MALIBU, Calif. – Klara Fabikova made sure California went home with some hardware on the last day of the Oracle/ITA Masters, as the 16th-ranked senior upset Miami's sixth-ranked Stephanie Wagner, 6-2, 6-3, in the consolation singles final on Sunday at the Malibu Racquet Club.

Fabikova made an impressive run to the title, defeating Vanderbilt's seventh-ranked Sydney Campbell in the quarterfinals and Mississippi State's 23rd-ranked Jasmine Lee on Saturday before topping another top-10 opponent in the final. 

“She did really well,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “It was her third straight top-25 opponent. She played really smart. We were familiar with Wagner, who played last fall against Maegan (Manasse) and Lynn (Chi). Klara stuck to her game plan, played really well and played confidently, which was why she was able to be successful in straight sets today.”

It was the third straight collegiate tournament in which Fabikova reached a final – including last season's Pac-12 singles and NCAA doubles championships. After losing those title matches, the third time was the charm for the native from Brno, Czech Republic.

“It was exciting, and it was just fun to play here and finally be able to pull out a win in a final,” Fabikova said. “I did a good job of mixing up the types of shots I was hitting today. My slice was working pretty well, I used a couple of drop shots, too, and my forehand was working pretty well.”

“It's great for her to end the tournament with a win,” Augustus said. “She's playing well. She has things to work on, but ending the weekend with a win is great. That'll bode well for her preparations for the All-American. I'm looking forward to see what the season has in store for her and all the girls.”

The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships – slated for Oct. 3-11 in Los Angeles – is the next national tournament on the schedule for the Bears. Prior to the All-American, the Bears host the Cal Nike Fall Invitational from Oct. 2-4 at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley.
