Manasse Wins in Singles, Doubles in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. ? After playing plenty of summer tennis all around the United States ? including tournaments in New York, Texas and Pennsylvania ? Maegan Manasse got to start the college season back home on Friday in southern California.

The California junior hails from Redondo Beach, roughly 75 minutes away from the Malibu Racquet Club, where Manasse, senior Klara Fabikova and junior Denise Starr opened play in the inaugural Oracle/ITA Masters, an invitational competition that includes many of the top players in the country.

“My mom came to watch today and my sister might come this weekend,” said Manasse, who is the top seed in singles and along with Starr is seeded No. 1 in doubles in Malibu. “The facility is so beautiful, and from some courts you have a view of the water. I've never played on these courts before, but it's great being back playing close to home.”

The fourth-ranked singles player in the nation, Manasse defeated Baylor's 53rd-ranked Kiah Generette, 7-5, 6-4, in the opening round of 16.

The All-American next plays Pepperdine's Luis Stefani in Saturday's quarterfinals.

“Maegan's opponent is really streaky,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “It was hard for Maegan to get a good rhythm. She hung in there and waited for her opportunities. She did a good job. That girl is also from southern California, and so they've known each other for a long time. She did a good job focusing and getting the match done in straight sets.”

Manasse also paired with Starr to dominate Miami's Sinead Lohan and Stephanie Wagner, 6-1, 6-0, in the doubles quarterfinal. The All-America duo ? ranked third in the nation ? takes on Kentucky's ninth-ranked Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi on Saturday.

“Denise and Maegan played well,” Augustus said. “It was their first match together in a little while. They played doubles over the summer; just not with each other. But they volleyed well today and returned well. They had really high first-serve percentages. They produced some good points and did a good job of finishing up the day with the doubles.”

The last time Fabikova played in southern California, she rode a hot streak to the 2015 Pac-12 singles championship before losing the conference final in Ojai. Now a senior ranked 16th in singles, Fabikova stretched her opening match to three sets in Malibu, but she wound up losing to Clemson's 11th-ranked Joana Eidukonyte, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2.

“Klara's opponent is ranked a few spots higher than Klara and is a good competitor,” Augustus said. “She likes her forehand, gets a lot of balls back and had a lot of high-quality points. Klara didn't serve as well as she would've liked, but these early season matches help you get back into your form and help you find out what you have to work on. Klara moved well, and if a few points here and there had gone her way, things could've gone differently. She'll keep working and with a bit more practice, the next time I'd have confidence she'd beat that girl.”

Fabikova - who also earned All-America honors in doubles last season - will play in the singles consolation bracket on Saturday against an opponent TBA.

SAN FRANCISCO ? Cal sophomores Karla Popovic and Lyann Hoang competed in the quarterfinals of both singles and doubles in the Battle in the Bay Classic on Friday, but the day ended with both Bears ousted from the event at the California Tennis Club.

First the two teamed up to face Hanna Borjeson and Genevieve McCloskey from host University of San Francisco in doubles on Friday morning. The Dons upended the Bears, 7-6(6).

Later in singles, the 64th-ranked and third-seeded Popovic lost in an upset to Pepperdine's Laura Gulbe, 7-6(2), 6-2. Hoang lost to the Dons' fourth-seeded and 91st ranked Andre Ka, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The Bears will rejoin the rest of the team when they host the Cal Nike Fall Invitational from Oct. 2-4 in Berkeley.
