WACO, Texas – Klara Fabikova and
Zsofi Susanyi were the last California players standing after Friday's NCAA Championship rounds of 16 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center, as the fifth-ranked doubles team won to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Playing Kentucky's 25th-ranked pair of Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi, the Nos. 5-8-seeded Bears dropped the first set before prevailing, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1. Susanyi, a senior, and Fabikova, a junior, will next play Vanderbilt's 18th-ranked Ashleigh Antal and Astral Sharma at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday for the right to advance to Sunday's semifinals.
“It's a great win for Klara and Zsofi today,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We're not very familiar with that team, so they had to make some adjustments in the match. It was a very long match, and I think Klara and Zsofi did a really good job of getting better as it went on. In the third set they were playing how they wanted to be playing. One match at a time, but they've been progressing nicely.”
A little earlier on Friday, Cal's seventh-ranked and Nos. 5-8-seeded pair of sophomores Denise Starr and Maegan Manasse lost to Stanford's 10th-ranked team of Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, to end their run in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
“Maegan and Denise played just a really close match that could've gone either way,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “You never want your season to end, but they're All-Americans and had a great year. They should finish, depending on how things finish here, I would say top eight in the rankings. They're only sophomores and will only keep getting better. They have great chemistry on the court. Maegan and Denise should compete some together over the summer and just keep improving.”
On Friday morning, the 43rd-ranked Susanyi ended her college singles career in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Stanford's second-seeded and second-ranked Carol Zhao. Manasse – ranked and seeded fourth – ended her singles season in a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Florida's 13th-ranked and Nos. 9-16-seeded Josie Kuhlman.
“Zsofi ran into Carol Zhao, whom she hasn't played before, and Carol's a really good opponent who played quite well,” Augustus said. “The games were closer than the score indicated but credit to Carol.
“Maegan did a good job fighting, but Maegan's lack of singles match play may have finally caught up with her. She did a really good job, but Kuhlman just made a few more shots today. Maegan had a fantastic year. This one match is in no way indicative of her season. She should finish top five in the rankings, and she's an All-American as is Zsofi. As disappointing as it is not to win today, they have to be proud of being All-Americans and getting this far in NCAA singles.”
The Bears claimed All-America status in doubles and Manasse became a singles All-American by virtue of their seeding in their respective tournaments, though Manasse would also have earned the singles All-America honor by reaching the round of 16. Susanyi earned her singles All-America status by reaching the NCAA singles round of 16.
