Susanyi, ranked 43rd, finished first among the Bears, beating the 49th-ranked Yuliya Lysa of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-2. Manasse ? seeded and ranked fourth ? later posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over VCU's 64th-ranked Cindy Chala.
Cal sophomore Denise Starr ? ranked 44th ? won her first set convincingly against Michigan's 31st-ranked Ronit Yurovsky. But the Wolverine ultimately prevailed in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
In one of the last matches in Waco on Wednesday night, the Bears' 18th-ranked Klara Fabikova took on Vanderbilt's eighth-seeded and eighth-ranked Sydney Campbell, who won the NCAA team championship with the rest of the Commodores on Tuesday. The Cal junior lost to Campbell, 6-3, 6-2.
On Thursday, Susanyi plays Mississippi's Julia Jones ? who is seeded Nos. 9-16 and ranked 10th ? in the round of 32 at 9 a.m. CT. Manasse starts at 10:30 a.m. CT Thursday against Alabama's 34th-ranked Erin Routliffe.
The NCAA Doubles Championship ? featuring the fifth-ranked team of Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova and the seventh-ranked duo of Manasse and Starr ? gets underway on Thursday at Baylor. Starr and Manasse play at 4:30 p.m. CT against Notre Dame's 29th-ranked Quinn Gleason/Monica Robinson in the opening round of 32, while Fabikova and Susanyi take on Georgia Tech's 21st-ranked Paige Hourigan/Kendal Woodard at 5 p.m. CT.
