OJAI, Calif. – Klara Fabikova advanced to Friday's singles quarterfinal round at the Pac-12 Championships that began on Thursday at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. The fourth-seeded and 25th-ranked Cal junior is the only Golden Bear left in the championship singles draw, as teammates
Zsofi Susanyi and
Denise Starr both lost in the round of 16.
Cal posted three victories in the opening round of 32. Fabikova notched the first win, beating Utah's Sarah Richter, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Denise Starr – ranked 42nd and seeded eighth – followed with a tight, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4), win over Arizona State's Kassidy Jump, and seventh-seeded and 41st-ranked senior Zsofi Susanyi beat Stanford's 100th-ranked Ellen Tsay, 6-1, 6-1.
Fabikova moved on to play Friday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Washington State's Donika Bashota in her next match. The Golden Bear takes on UCLA's Jennifer Brady on Friday at noon.
“Klara played really well today,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Both of her opponents came out ready to go and Klara had to find her way through both matches. Both were a little bit different. In that first match, she played someone with big serve, who hit lots of angles and went to the net. In the second match, she played an aggressive baseliner who liked to hit the ball good and deep. Klara did a good job of adjusting.”
But Starr fell against Utah's 65th-ranked Tereza Bekerova, 6-4, 6-2, and Susanyi lost to USC's 45th-ranked Zoë Scandalis, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16.
“That was a really good match,” Augustus said of the Susanyi-Scandalis clash. “Both played well today; Zoë just played a little bit better. It was a high-quality match, and they both learned a lot from it.
“Denise served really well today. She ran into someone this morning who was red hot. She did a great job finding her way through that match. Winning 7-6 in the last set showed a lot. Denise served well again in the afternoon, but the player from Utah played very well. Unfortunately things didn't go Denise's way in that match.”
Four Bears played in the invitational singles draw. Freshman Karla Popovic – seeded fourth and ranked 92nd – beat Arizona's Inge Hendrikx, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 32. But three Bears lost in the opening round: Senior Cecilia Estlander suffered a three-set loss to Arizona State's Gussie O'Sullivan, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, sophomore Stephane Lin fell to USC's third-seeded and 85th-ranked Gabby Smith, 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Lyann Hoang lost to Utah's Victoria Robertson, 6-4, 6-2.
Popovic lost to USC's Zoë Katz in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-2.
Both the championship and invitational doubles tournaments begin on Friday at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. Cal has two teams in each: The eight-ranked and third-seeded pair of Starr and sophomore Maegan Manasse is slated to take on Washington's Elianne Douglas-Miron and Julija Lukac at 9 a.m., while the sixth-ranked and second-seeded pair of Susanyi and Fabikova is scheduled for a 10:15 a.m. match with UCLA's Chanelle Van Nguyen and Kristin Wiley.
