BERKELEY – Denise Starr clinched No. 7 California's second consecutive Pac-12 win on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex, as the Golden Bears romped over Utah, 7-0. Cal won its fourth straight dual match overall and improved its record to 9-2 (2-0 in the Pac-12).
Utah fell to 3-8 (0-2 Pac-12).
“This feels really good,” senior Zsofi Susanyi said of the win, “because we came out strong and were able to finish strong. In matches like this, our focus can get away from us. If we can hold ourselves together and stay focused, that's the most important thing.”
The Bears clinched doubles when the 12th-ranked pair of Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova defeated Elena Najera-Salas and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa, 8-4.
Cal got off to a quick start in singles, with the 24th-ranked Susanyi and second-ranked Maegan Manasse vying to post the first win. In the end, Manasse, a sophomore, completed her 6-0, 6-2 victory over No. 53 Tereza Bekerova on court one (Newmark Stadium) just seconds before Susanyi wrapped up her 6-0, 6-1 win over Margo Pletcher on court four (Savides Sullivan Court).
Starr, a sophomore ranked 61st in singles, secured the overall match at 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa on court three (Mascarin Court). On Friday, Starr also clinched the 7-0 win over Colorado with her court-three singles victory and clinched the doubles point against the Buffaloes with Manasse on court one.
“Denise has been working a lot on her slice backhand, especially this weekend,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “She's made a lot of improvements on her footwork, I'd say, the last two to three weeks. It's nice to see it show up in her play. I think she's also had really good focus in her matches, so she's been able to work on her slice, keep her mental focus, and be able to still use her big forehand and big serve.”
The teams played out the remaining three matches, with Cal getting wins from the 42nd-ranked Fabikova, 41st-ranked freshman Karla Popovic and sophomore Stephane Lin to make the final score 7-0. Lin has won both her singles dual matches this season – on Friday against Colorado and Saturday against the Utes.
The Bears take a brief detour from conference play when they visit No. 58 San Diego State on March 13 and No. 16 Pepperdine on March 14. In fact Cal plays its next six matches away from the cozy confines of the Hellman Tennis Complex.
“It's going to be hard, but it's going to be a lot of fun,” Starr said. “I think we're all super pumped to go away and compete on the road.”
