SAN DIEGO – Ninth-ranked California won its fifth consecutive dual match with a 7-0 blanking of No. 65 San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center. Cal improved its record to 10-2 after the nonconference match, while the Aztecs fell to 6-7.

The Golden Bears captured the doubles point when their two nationally ranked pairs each won 6-1. First the fifth-ranked duo of sophomores Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr beat Jana Buth and Kristin Buth on court one, and then the 11th-ranked team of  junior Klara Fabikova and senior Zsofi Susanyi defeated Hailey Johnson and Tami Nguyen on court two.

“I thought we played good doubles,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “A year ago when we played them up at our place they surprised us a bit in the doubles. It shows the experience of our team in doubles. I thought all three courts came out with good intensity and were ready to play. We really didn't give San Diego State the opportunity to get into the doubles point. It was good to see us get that point on the board in the match relatively quickly.”

The teams completed every match on Friday, including at court-three doubles, as the pair of junior Lynn Chi and freshman Karla Popovic knocked off Kennedy Davis and Dora Somoracz, 6-2. San Diego State's Davis is the younger sister of former Bear Tayler Davis, who completed her Cal career in 2013.

This marked the fourth doubles match of the spring for Chi.

“She's really been working hard to get back in the lineup and feel good on the court,” Augustus said of the All-American and 2014 NCAA singles runner-up. “She did a really good job today in the doubles. Hopefully she'll continue progressing every week.”

In singles, the fourth-ranked Manasse knocked off Kristin Buth, 6-2, 6-1, on court one, with the 29th-ranked Susanyi following with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over the younger Buth, Jana, 6-1, 6-0, on court four. Starr, ranked 81st, clinched her third consecutive dual match with a court-three victory over Davis, 6-4, 6-3, to make the score 4-0

Augustus added, “I have to give San Diego State credit. After that fairly decisive doubles point, they came out and competed hard in the singles on every court. Their courts are a little bit slower than our courts, and they took a little bit of adjusting to. All in all I was happy with us being able to find our way through a couple of three setters in those matches.”

Cal wrapped up the 7-0 victory with singles wins from the 27th-ranked Fabikova, senior Cecilia Estlander and the 60th-ranked Popovic.

Cal's San Diego State match was the first contest in a six-match road trip that gets increasingly more difficult, particularly in southern California. The Bears play at No. 21 Pepperdine in a nonconference match on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Malibu, California, then next Friday they play at No. 2 UCLA and a week from tomorrow – on March 21 – Cal takes on No. 4 USC in Los Angeles.
