SAN FRANCISCO - Thirteenth-ranked California stayed unbeaten by topping San Francisco, 4-1, on Friday night at Bay Club San Francisco. The Golden Bears improved to 6-0 after the nonconference victory, while the Dons fell to 1-1.

The teams moved the match - Initially scheduled to be played on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley - to the indoor courts to avoid the rains in the San Francisco Bay Area; it began at 9:30 p.m. at Bay Club SF.

Cal dropped two of three doubles matches to lose the doubles point to the Dons. The pair of junior Mads Engsted and sophomore Filip Bergevi had the lone doubles win for the Bears, beating Christian Brockstedt and James Tallman, 6-4, on court two.

The Bears rebounded in singles with wins from freshman Billy Griffith, juniors Mads Engsted and Oskar Wikberg, and senior Gregory Bayane to complete the victory over the Dons.

“It was the kind of match that will help us prepare for the national team indoors next week because we played away from home for the first time this season, there was a vocal crowd for both teams and we were able to get used to the different sounds and lighting indoors,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “USF came out strong in the doubles, so we once again had to play with a 1-0 deficit heading into the singles. Strong performances form all of our guys in singles was encouraging, and we put the match away a few minutes before midnight.”

Cal next competes in the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship from Feb. 13-16 in Chicago.
