CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Down 3-0 in the overall match, fifth-ranked and fifth-seeded California (3-0) won the last four singles matches to take a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over 11th-ranked Vanderbilt (3-1) on Friday in the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship opening round of 16. Senior Cecilia Estlander completed the comeback with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Georgina Sellyn on court six at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

“It was great,” said the veteran Golden Bear. “I absolutely loved being the last one out there. This is my last year, and I'm making the most out of it. The entire team is made up of super stars, and I knew I had to bring it today. I'm just going to enjoy it. I only have so many matches left, and I'm going to enjoy every single match.”

“We were trying to figure out,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “I think we haven't played Vanderbilt in about 15 years or so. It's one of the great parts about this tournament – coming here and getting new opponents; not people we see every day. They gave us a tough match, they competed hard and they're well-coached, just first-class young women. It was all about the tennis. I'm just proud of my group. We had a senior clinch the match for us, so that was really fun.”

Cal next plays TCU (4-1) at 3:30 p.m. ET in Saturday's quarterfinal round. The 20th-ranked Horned Frogs upset fourth-seeded and fourth-ranked defending champion Duke, 4-3, in Friday's round of 16.

The Bears trailed Vanderbilt early after dropping the doubles point. The pair of Estlander and freshman Karla Popovic fell to Frances Altick/Astra Sharma, 6-0, on court one before Cal's ninth-ranked duo of senior Zsofi Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova beat Ashleigh Antal/Marie Casares, 6-2. But the 32nd-ranked team of Courtney Colton/Sydney Campbell upset Cal's fourth-ranked pair of sophomores Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr, 7-6(5), to give the doubles point to the Commodores.

“I knew we were a really resilient team in singles – we've got a lot of experience on the court – but Vanderbilt winning the doubles point definitely gave them an emotional lift, and they came out ready to go,” Augustus said. “We had to really work and battle and figure out what needed to be done.”

More upset losses followed for the Bears in singles. First, the 30th-ranked Popovic dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to the 77th-ranked Casares on court five, and then the 64th-ranked Starr lost, 6-3, 7-5, to Sharma on court four. Vandy led, 3-0.

The 14th-ranked Susanyi began the comeback on court three with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Altick, and the fifth-ranked Manasse continued the surge with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over the 15th-ranked Campbell on court one. The 78th-ranked Fabikova tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Colton on court two, setting the stage for Estlander.

“I'm just so pleased because she just didn't play her best in doubles,” Augustus said of Estlander, “so to just hang in there and not give up on herself and figure a way out of this match and clinch it for the team, I'm just really, really proud of her and the whole team.”
