PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – California's Klara Fabikova won her rematch with Catherine Harrison, and the Golden Bears went three for three overall in main draw openers on Thursday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.

Golden Bear junior Maegan Manasse also won in singles, and Manasse and junior Denise Starr triumphed in doubles at the Riviera Tennis Club.

“We had a great first day at the tournament,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We played well in both singles and doubles.”

The singles match between the 16th-ranked Fabikova and UCLA's 22nd-ranked Harrison was a rematch of the Pac-12 singles championship from last spring. Harrison prevailed then, but the Cal senior beat the Bruin this time, 7-6(2), 2-6), 6-3.

“UCLA is one of those teams we see a lot, and all those players are very talented,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “The Pac-12 singles final last year didn't go her way, but Klara was excited for the opportunity today. All three sets of the match were very entertaining for the fans watching and featured a high level of tennis. It was great to see Klara fight through that match. She struck the ball better and better as the match went along.”

Seeded third in the singles tournament and ranked fourth nationally, Manasse topped Texas A&M's Saska Gavrilovska, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1. In Friday's round of 16, Manasse faces Northwestern's 110th-ranked Maddie Lipp and Fabikova plays Michigan's 19th-ranked Ronit Yurovsky at 11:45 a.m. PT.

In Thursday's main draw doubles opening round of 32, the second-seeded and third-ranked pair of Manasse and Starr beat the 16th-ranked team of Georgia's Silvia Garcia and Kennedy Shaffer, 8-6. The two Bears next play Georgia Tech's sixth-seeded and seventh-ranked Woodard and Hourigan at 10 a.m. PT on Friday.

Cal is seeking to add to its five total championships at the All-American. Besides the Bears' three singles titles, Cal has won two doubles championships at the Riviera Tennis Club, which is hosting the All-American for the 30th consecutive year.

Augustus – a two-time NCAA champion in doubles – was part of the duo that won the Bears' last doubles crown in Pacific Palisades. She teamed with Renata Kolbovic to beat Stanford's Ania Bleszynski and Katie Schlukebir, 6-2, 7-6, in the 1995 final.

“It's a big deal to win a national championship in singles or doubles,” Augustus said, “and that's one of our goals as a program. We've had a lot of success at this tournament in singles and in doubles, too. Just as in every year, all the teams here are good, and we just have to take it round by round and day by day.

“When you do win a championship in doubles, there's always one or two really tough matches you have to find your way out of. When we won our doubles championship here in '95, we came through qualifying to win it. We enjoyed it so much we just wanted to stay here as long as we could. Denise and Maegan are very prepared and have been working hard. They're a very good doubles team.”
