DAVIS, Calif. ? Led by Mads Engsted and sophomore J.T. Nishimura in the top-flight singles bracket, California put three Golden Bears in singles quarterfinals and two pairs in doubles quarterfinals in the annual Aggie Invitational at UC Davis. After a first-round bye, the top-seeded Engsted beat Nevada's Andrew Poustie, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the A flight's round of 16 to reach Saturday's quarters.

The Cal senior ? who won the top-flight singles title last year ? plays Santa Clara's Andrew Gu at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

Nishimura, also in flight A, captured two wins, first knocking off Sacramento State's Mikus Losbergs, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 32 and then beating Jesse Ross of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-1, to join Engsted in the third round. The sophomore takes on Stanford's third-seeded Anthony Tsodikov at 11 a.m. in the quarters.

In flight B singles, freshman Ryan Shen also won twice, getting past Nevada's Aaron Breust, who withdrew with an injury, and topping Tommy Lam of the host Aggies, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 16. Shen battles Santa Clara's Kamran Khan also at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The top-seeded pair of Engsted and Nishimura ? the tournament's defending champion ? had a bye in the opening round of 16 and plays Stanford's Roy Lederman and Brandon Sutter at 8:30 a.m. in Saturday's quarters.

The pair of Shen and freshman Gunther Matta beat Santa Clara's Connor Garnett and Jeffrey Liang, 8-5, in the flight B round of 16. The Bears play Nevada's Clint Mile and the Aggies' Everett Maltby at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
