SEATTLE – California captured three main draw singles matches on the first day of action on Thursday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in the Pacific Northwest.

At the Nordstrom Tennis Center, Golden Bear senior Mads Engsted, one of eight No. 17 seeds, defeated Portland's Alex Wallace, 6-1, 6-1, sophomore J.T. Nishimura – also a 17th seed – beat Portland's Jamie Fisher, 6-3, 6-0, and freshman Ryan Shen knocked off Portland State's Ethan Lopez, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 128.

Cal also lost three singles matches on Thursday, as senior Wyatt Houghton fell to Portland's Mathieu Garcia, 6-2, 6-3, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, freshman Gunther Matta dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 result to San Francisco's Thomas Takemoto, and senior Jordan Smith lost to Eastern Washington's Robert Dula, 6-1, 6-2. The latter two matches took place at the Eastside Tennis Center.

In Cal's lone main draw doubles match on Thursday, the pair of Matta and Shen lost to Manuel De Luis Lameles and Nash Vollenweider of Saint Mary's, 8-5, in the opening round of 64 at the NTC.

The regional singles and doubles champions qualify for November's USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

The regional championships continue on Friday.
