PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – California's
Denise Starr and
Maegan Manasse qualified for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships later this fall when they won their main draw doubles semifinal on Saturday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The Golden Bear duo is the first Cal doubles team to reach the All-American final since head coach
Amanda Augustus won it as a Cal player in 1995.
The Cal juniors – seeded second in the tournament and ranked third nationally – defeated Pepperdine's seventh-seeded and eighth-ranked team of Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox, 6-4, 6-1, in the semi at the Riviera Tennis Club.
“Qualifying for national indoors was one of their goals coming to this event, so I'm happy to see them accomplish that today,” Augustus said. “Denise and Maegan played well. They made a transition from playing a pro set to a two out of three-set match in the doubles tournament, and they did a good job of keeping their focus, their concentration the whole match. They played better in the second set than the first. They were able to play their aggressive style of doubles, win a lot of points at the net and were able to break the other team down. We're really excited to have them in the championship match.”
Cal is two for two in All-American doubles finals. Augustus and Renata Kolbovic won the title in 1995 and Pam Nelson and Keirsten Alley captured the championship in 1993.
Manasse, who has been one of the nation's top singles and doubles players so far this season, had already qualified for the national indoor tournament in singles, when she won a Friday quarterfinal to reach Saturday's singles semifinals. That was one round further than Manasse reached at last year's All-American. Saturday's match marked her second semi in a national tournament this fall and was a rematch of the Oracle/ITA Masters semi against Virginia's Danielle Collins, who defeated Manasse in three sets on Sept. 20.
In the All-American, the third-seeded and fourth-ranked Manasse lost to the eighth-ranked and seventh-seeded Cavalier, 7-6(7), 6-3.
“It was a great match,” Augustus said. “Danielle is a tough competitor. She's been in form this week, but all the points in the games were really close and tough. They've played in a couple of the same events this year so far, and they're two of the best players in the country right now. Today a couple points went Danielle's way, and there were a couple things Maegan maybe could've done differently. But these matches are good experience. And they'll get to see each other again.”
MORAGA, Calif. - Cal sophomore Lyann Hoang and third-seeded freshman Olivia Hauger dropped out of the Flight A Singles main draw with round of 16 losses on Saturday at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational.
Hoang fell against Pacific's fifth-seeded Viktoriya Dzyuba, 6-3, 6-2, while Hauger lost to San Jose State's Marie Klocker, 7-6(3), 6-3.
The Saint Mary's Fall Invitational ends on Sunday.
