PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. ?
Maegan Manasse led another strong day for California on Friday, winning in singles and doubles to reach Saturday semifinals in both tournaments at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The Golden Bear junior combined with junior
Denise Starr to win in the doubles quarterfinals and won twice herself in singles at the Riviera Tennis Club.
In main draw singles on Friday, the third-seeded and fourth-ranked Manasse first defeated Northwestern's 110th-ranked Maddie Lipp, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16. The Cal star then beat Florida's 32nd-ranked Belinda Woolcock, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals to book her spot in the final four. Manasse will face Virginia's seventh-seeded and eighth-ranked Danielle Collins ? the 2014 NCAA singles champion ? in Saturday's semis.
Klara Fabikova played a tough, three-set round of 16 match in main draw singles, but the 16th-ranked Cal senior lost to Michigan's 19th-ranked Ronit Yurovsky, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The second-seeded and third-ranked team of Starr and Manasse posted an impressive victory in the main draw doubles quarterfinals, topping Georgia Tech's sixth-seeded and seventh-ranked pair of Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan, 8-4. In Saturday's semifinals, the Bears face Pepperdine's seventh-seeded and eighth-ranked team of Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox.
Starr and Manasse would advance to the national indoor championships in doubles by reaching the doubles final in Pacific Palisades.
“We got the day off to a good start in doubles,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Denise and Maegan played quite well and were able to get up early and then close out the match. They did a really good in advancing to the semifinals tomorrow.
“In singles, Maegan played even a bit better today than yesterday. With each match she's striking the ball a little better and placing the ball a little better. It was just good to see her get through both singles matches in straight sets today so that she could conserve some energy for the rest of the weekend.
“Ronit ? Klara's opponent ? is a tough competitor, and no matter how well you start, she'll battle, and she competes till the very last point. She lifted her game in the second set. Klara just wasn't able to close her out in the third. But that match produced some good tennis, and Klara had a good tournament in reaching the round of 16 for a second year in a row. Klara's had some great wins already this fall. She's going to go home and work on a few things in her game and continue to get ready for the rest of the fall, and hopefully she'll get to advance to New York with Maegan through the regional tournament.”
MORAGA, Calif. ? Cal sophomore Lyann Hoang and freshman Olivia Hauger advanced to the Flight A Singles round of 16 with wins on Friday, the first day of the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
Hauger, seeded third, beat Fresno State's Emma Wilson, 6-2, 6-3, while Hoang knocked off Eastern Michigan's Andre Martinovski, 7-6(3), 6-2. Stephane Lin was also in Flight A Singles, but the sixth-seeded Cal junior lost to Jana McCord of the host Gaels, 6-0, 6-0.
