Bears Win 10 of 12 to Open Cal Winter Invitational
BERKELEY – California continued its build up to the dual-match season with a typically robust start to the Cal Winter Invitational, as the Golden Bears romped to 10 wins in 12 matches on Friday.
Amanda Augustus' squad captured seven of eight singles matches and three of four doubles matches at the tournament played at the Hellman Tennis Complex and at the Channing Tennis Courts.
Under cloudy skies, Cal began with six singles matches against Fresno State at Hellman and played another two in singles at Channing. In the Bears' first five matches at Hellman, they did not drop a set, though 14th-ranked senior Zsofi Susanyi was pushed in a 6-3, 7-6(5) win over FSU's Rana Sherif Ahmed. After a brief rain delay, fifth-ranked sophomore Maegan Manasse closed out Cal's singles at Hellman with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory over the 47th-ranked Sophie Watts.
Cal began its doubles matches with Cal Poly at Hellman 10 minutes after the host's singles matches ended. The Bears won their first three matches with identical 6-3 scores, including the ninth-ranked pair of Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova beating Danè Joubert/Molly Reed and the fourth-ranked team of Manasse and sophomore Denise Starr topping Emily Gibbens/Louise Oxnevad. Cal freshmen Karla Popovic and Stephane Lin dropped a tight match to Zoe Oedekerk/Hannah Stone, 7-6(3), to end the first day of action for the Bears.
“It's nice to get back on the courts at home,” said Augustus, Cal's eighth-year head coach. “This tournament's great because everyone on the team gets the opportunity to play, whereas when we move into dual matches next week it'll just be six singles and three doubles matches each time. We were almost perfect and pretty successful in singles in doubles. The new ones on the team are learning a lot. It's just really important to compete consistently in the spring, and any opportunity we get to play in a match it's good. It was a great first day.”
The three-day Cal Winter Invitational continues on Saturday, starting with Cal taking on Cal Poly in singles at 10 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
