LAHAINA, Hawaii – California continued its winning ways on Friday at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Maui, as the Golden Bears swept all eight of their singles matches in the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational.
After winning eight of 12 matches in the University of Hawaii's competition on Thursday, Cal won 11 of 12 on Friday.
The Bears – who feature two doubles teams ranked in the top 10 of the ITA poll – also captured three of four doubles matches to start the day. The fourth-ranked duo of sophomores Denise Starr and Maegan Manasse defeated the Hawaii team of Cindy Nguyen and Viktoria Malova, 6-4. Ranked ninth, the pair of senior Zsofi Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova overpowered the Duke team of Beatrice Capra and Samantha Harris, 6-1.
Cal freshman Karla Popovic and Stephane Lin also posted a victory after topping Hawaii's Rebecca Faltusz/Daisy Green, 6-4. The senior/freshman pair of Cecilia Estlander/Lyann Hoang dropped a 6-3 result to the Blue Devils' Rebecca Smaller/Annie Mulholland.
In singles, the Bears compiled a 4-0 record over Duke and a 4-0 record against the Rainbow Wahine on Friday.
Fabikova, ranked 78th, posted an upset, defeating Duke's 55th-ranked Samantha Harris, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. The fifth-ranked Manasse also took a Blue Devil to three sets before prevailing, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Capra. The 30th-ranked Popovic topped Duke's Alyssa Smith, 6-3, 6-2, and the 64th-ranked Starr beat Mulholland, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-0.
The Bears lost just one set against Hawaii in singles, as Estlander beat Faltusz, 6-3, 6-1, the 14th-ranked Susanyi topped Martina Kostalova, 6-2, 7-5, Hoang held off Klara Pribylova, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Lin defeated Green, 6-1, 6-1.
The Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational ends on Saturday.
