BERKELEY – Zsofi Susanyi and
Lynn Chi held off two other Golden Bears on Saturday to set up a meeting with yet another California duo –
Denise Starr and
Maegan Manasse –in Sunday's blue doubles final in the Cal Nike Fall Invitational.
The 31st-ranked pair of Chi - a junior - and Susanyi - a senior - knocked off the Cal team of junior Klara Fabikova and freshman Karla Popovic, 6-3, 6-2, in the blue doubles semifinal round at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Sophomores Manasse and Starr – the top-ranked Cal doubles team at No. 11 – defeated Arizona State's pair of Ebony Panoho and Gussie O'Sullivan, 6-4, 6-2, in their semifinal.
The blue doubles final is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start on Sunday, the last day of the three-day tournament, which includes matches played at the Channing Tennis Courts. Additionally, Manasse and Starr each advanced to separate blue singles semifinals, which are slated to start 11 a.m. on Sunday at Hellman.
In the blue singles quarterfinals, the second-seeded and 25th-ranked Starr topped the 116th-ranked Catherine Leduc of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 6-2, while the third-seeded and 43rd-ranked Manasse rebounded to beat Pacific's Hana Ritterova, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
A third Bear – senior Cecilia Estlander – reached a Sunday semifinal when she knocked off Nevada's Julliette Legendre, 6-4, 6-0, on court one in the gold singles quarterfinals on Saturday. A Bear vs. Bear semifinal was not to be, as Cal freshman Lyann Hoang fell to Fresno State's third-seeded Anneka Watts, 7-5, 6-1, in another quarterfinal. Estlander will take on Watts at 2 p.m. in Sunday's gold final.
Stephane Lin was the fourth Bear to advance to a Sunday semifinal. The Cal redshirt freshman beat Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(3), in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Also Saturday, Cal freshman Karla Popovic beat Fresno State's Tanya Murtagh, 6-1, 7-6(4), in a round-robin singles match.
Hoang and Lin paired up to win a gold doubles consolation quarterfinal – beating Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke and Zeina El Tawil, 6-7(4), 6-4, 1-0(8) – but the Bears lost to Nevada's Legendre and Sheila Smiley, 6-7(5), 6-4, 1-0(9), in the semifinals.
