Bears Lose in Doubles to Close All-American
TULSA, Okla. – California completed its run at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Saturday when Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton suffered an upset loss in the consolation doubles quarterfinal round. The fourth-seeded and seventh-ranked Golden Bears fell to N.C. State's Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(9), at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
“Chase and Greg played three very tough matches with each one going to a third-set tiebreaker,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “The tennis was high quality throughout the week, and we certainly have areas where we can focus on improvement. Overall we leave this tournament more determined than ever.”
Bayane and Melton also beat Oklahoma's 40th-ranked Axel Alvarez/Dane Webb, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(7), in the consolation round of 16 and lost to Texas A&M's 37th-ranked Jeremy Efferding/Jordan Szabo, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8), in the main draw round of 32 at the All-American.
Currently, six Bears are also competing in the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis, and freshman Billy Griffith is playing in The First Republic Bank Tiburon Challenger. The $100,000 hard-court men's event is taking place at the Tiburon Peninsula Club in Tiburon, Calif. Check CalBears.com later Saturday for those results.
