PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Maegan Manasse made the biggest news in the opening round of main draw singles at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Thursday, as the California sophomore upset defending champion, top-seeded and top-ranked Jamie Loeb of North Carolina, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Cal won three singles matches in the opening round of 32, as 16th-ranked senior Zsofi Susanyi defeated Auburn's 36th-ranked Pleun Burgmans, 6-2, 6-2, and 60th-ranked junior Klara Fabikova beat Alabama's 115th-ranked Natalia Maynetto, 6-2, 6-1.

Manasse's win marked the second time in less than six months that a Golden Bear has upset Loeb, as current junior Lynn Chi knocked off the top-ranked Tar Heel in the NCAA singles quarterfinals last May en route to the national championship match.

But Chi suffered her own upset in Pacific Palisades, as Texas A&M's 34th-ranked Saska Gavrilovska upended the Bear, 6-3, 7-6(5).

Friday's singles round of 16 matches are all scheduled for 9 a.m. starts. Chi will play in the consolation singles bracket on Friday.

In the main draw doubles opening round of 32, Cal's 11th-ranked pair of Manasse and sophomore Denise Starr prevailed over Florida's Josie Kuhlman and Peggy Porter, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. But the Bears' run in the main draw ended in the next round, as USC's sixth-seeded and seventh-ranked Zoe Scandalis/Giuliana Olmos beat the Cal duo, 6-0, 6-4.

The tournament – which featured pre-qualifying and qualifying matches at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles – changed venues for the main draws to the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades.
