STANFORD, Calif. – California freshman Karla Popovic pulled off an impressive victory in beating senior teammate Zsofi Susanyi in singles quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Sunday, when two Golden Bear doubles teams advanced to the semifinals at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cal victories set up Monday semifinals featuring the Bears - including Susanyi in doubles - taking on the Cardinal.

“It's going to be great tomorrow in the singles and doubles,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “It's going to be all Cal and all Stanford. It's great for the team and a kind of a preview for the season. Stanford is obviously one of our biggest rivals, and we'll see a lot of them as the year progresses. And we're playing on their home court. We're happy to see two Cal doubles teams against two Stanford doubles teams in the semifinals. It's a great opportunity in our region. We'll see that in singles as well. For Karla, it's a new experience for her.”

Popovic, the only first-year and unranked Bear among the four Cal players in quarterfinals, survived her third consecutive three-set match to defeat Susanyi, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Susanyi is seeded third at the regional and is ranked 16th.

“It was just a really competitive match,” Augustus said. “Obviously those are matches we don't coach, and I think it's always tough to play your teammate. Yesterday with Karla's win over the best player from USF, Andrea Ka, the score didn't indicate how tough a match it was. That built her up for today. They had a very long, hard-fought match today.”

Top-seeded and eighth-ranked junior Lynn Chi fell in the quarterfinals to Stanford's seventh-seeded and 22nd-ranked Taylor Davidson, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Maegan Manasse – seeded fifth and ranked 43rd – lost to another Stanford player, the second-seeded and 17th-ranked Carol Zhao, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

Popovic will play Zhao in Monday's semifinal round.

In the doubles round of 16, the top-seeded and 11th-ranked team of Manasse and sophomore Denise Starr beat Washington State's Donika Bashota/Victoria Matejevic, 8-6, the third-seeded tandem of Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova prevailed 8-5 over Washington State's Lize Leenknecht/Elizaveta Luzina, and the seventh-seeded pair of Chi and Popovic won, 8-1, over Cal Poly's Emily Gibbens/Zoe Oedekerk. But the run ended for Chi and Popovic in the quarterfinals, in which they lost to Stanford's second-seeded Davidson/Zhao, 8-0.

Starr and Manasse advanced to the semis with an 8-5 victory over San Francisco's Ka/Marina Nikolic, while Susanyi and Fabikova won, 8-4, over San Jose State's fifth-seeded Marie Klocker/Gaelle Rey, 8-4, in the quarters.

Manasse and Starr will play the fourth-seeded and 40th-ranked Stanford team of Carolina Doyle/Ellen Tsay, and Fabikova and Susanyi will take on Davidson/Zhao

Regional action will begin on Monday with singles at 9:30 a.m., with doubles to follow.
